The Creative Oppertunity of Code Nowerdays

Being a C++ developer, it is so easy and very attractive to reinvent the wheel. The coding language gives you more control and low level functionality than any other out there - and you want to use that to it's fullest...

C++ attracts this kind of thinking. I ditched Python years ago because it just didn't give me what I wanted - if you use C++ you can code from the ground up, it is a beacon for do-it-yourself types or more accurately I-want-to-do-it-my-way types...

With code, you are fully exposed to much of the unique oppertunity computers creativley give, as opposed to Photoshop which is more a production tool - something we used to be able to do, now much easier, faster and to a higher quality....

However, there is a tendancy to be stubborn and ignorant of a lot of the other types of oppertunities because of the full control code gives...

Mainly that of using other's code - other people's work, ideas or tools. There is something to be said for this as we have all run into the limitations of using open source code - costing a lot of backtracking to either recode yourself or dive deep and edit, kinda defeatng the point of using the code in the first place...

But there's a kind of one-upmanship associated with programming, a kind of arrogant 'I will be the best and outsmart you with my brilliant code' mentality that really goes against some of the best oppertunities that code gives us...

When you don't want to use another's code not for a logistical reason but for a reason of pride, you will always loose out to the artist who is able to reference and remix other's ideas with their own - a much quicker, cleverer and empathetic way of making that fully takes the oppertunities afforded in this modern time and place...

The computer not only gives us new creative oppertunities with it's capabilities, but allows us to change and build on our own - the oppertunity is both a creative and moral one: to make full use of our tools, we ourselves must become better people.
