PROCESS

My process involves a back-and-forth between painting by hand and painting by code. I design drawing algorithms, instructions for the computer, that produce imagry that'd be impossible to create otherwise. I feed these algorithms hand-painted images and then paint back over the result. This cycle repeats and is adapted as much as the work requires, building up layers of hand-crafted digital paint.

■

It is a mixture of unexpected results and artistic intention, similar to the unexpected nuance of traditional media like watercolours and oil paint but with the oppertunity to artistically express by designing the paint's behaviour through code.

■

This is not the only approach I use though a balance between drawing and coding is usually taken in all my projects. I may write drawing software I directly draw within or have the paint and code made separatley to integreate together later. The specific methods don't matter as long as there is a sense of uniqueness to the imagrey - which usually involves both the best of hand-drawing and the best of procedural design, compensating for each of their limitations.

■

The process is an artisticlly intimate one with the coding being just as important and expressive to me as the drawing. The oppertunity of creating digital paint that is encoded with behaviour written by the artist excites me and drives me to create new works exploring unusual and unique visuals and to disrupt the notions of art and maths as separate fields.

By having code and illustrative skills at your disposal a wide range of solutions to projects are available to you. You are not limited to manufactured software and as such have flexability in approach. Being a developer and an illustrator, I can solve a wide variety of client challenges and deliver destictive, inter-medial content. Not only does the design look unique, but it serves multiple functions -- engaging audiences on a new level.
